5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV For Smaller Rooms, 21 May 2012

I have had this TV from Sony for a few days now and will try to evaluate what it can and cannot do. The bottom line is this is an excellent TV for small rooms. Although at typical viewing distances those who need glasses should use them! (My better half couldn't read the guide in bed with the TV 9 or 10 feet away).

The setup.

This is rapid, when you first power up the set asks for 40 seconds to initialise, than asks for a geographical location. As long as you have an aeriel plugged in the following bit (scanning for TV & radio programs) takes a few minutes. I found 119 channels using a tiny indoor antenna, in just a few minutes. The internet setup failed twice over wifi, worked when I plugged an ethernet cable in, then when I reset it to wifi was absolutely fine! I'd be interested to hear if anyone else had issues there.

The TV

The set is "HD READY" but it is not 1080P. The description states that the number of horizontal lines is 768, some way below 1080. So the picture is scaled by the TV - although frankly with a screen of this size you need your nose to be touching the screen to see any difference. The picture is uniformly bright, crisp, detailed and suffers no bleeding, ghosting or any other picture defect when a good antenna is used.

Recording

The set takes USB storage and will record onto it. I just plugged a 16GB flash drive in and the TV said it has to be >32GB. So, drat - I cannot test that today.

Widgets

The set has a number of these - shortcuts to facebook, twitter etc. In these days of smartphones and iPads I really cannot see the use.

Media Player

It can access media stored centrally via UPnP protocol. I have a load of media (mp3s, photos and videos) on a central NAS drive running Twonky. As the TV is on the same network it sees Twonky and allows me to play my mp3s, and view my photos through the TV. Videos are little more tricky. I have failed to get any AVI videos to work despite the manual claiming it can play them. MP4 works fine. I am converting everything. (Grrr).

Internet Services

It has a number of these: BBC Iplayer, Channel 5 on Demand (or whatever its called), BBC News, Netflix, Lovefilm etc. I can confirm iplayer runs beautifully. Very surprised not to see ITV or Channel 4 services.

Internet Browser

Another service that smart phones and tablets and laptops do so much better. You have a browser on your PS3? On your Wii? Ever use them? No, of course not. Same here.

TV Stand

The TV can be wall mounted (its very light and slim) or you can use the profided stand. It just slips in and is secured by 2 screws. Easy.

Ports

I counted 1 USB, 2 HDMI, 1 Scart, 1 ariel, one set of composites, one ethernet, one pc vga, one conditional access module slot, 1 headphone port and one digital audio out.

Remote Control

Its OK, relatively sensibly laid out and comes with batteries. Hurrah.

Instructions

The paper book is a little insubstantial The set does have electronic guides on how to do all of its functions as well however.

Conclusion

Excellent for its core purpose: being a small TV with a great picture and surprisingly good audio. I am yet to be convinced that "smart" features are really needed on a TV. Surely a screen should be dumb, as you want it to last for a while. The stuff that feeds into it needs the clever technology - by embedding it in the TV you risk it becoming obsolete more quickly.

We've got this TV mounted in the bedroom, it has a white surrond and just looks very smart and takes up so little room. As to performance as a TV ... It has a Freeview digital tuner that also receives the HD free channels. The sound is quite adequate in the bedroom and for such a slim unit. The picture quality is excellent. It is also a 'smartTV', so it connects to your router (easily) and you can stream iplayer, skype etc as you so choose. For the modern generation it is very versatile. We are well pleased with this TV. It's a super package.

This is a nice telly, not too big so it sits neatly on the top of a set of drawers with space for my cat to flake out so he can still watch the birds.

Easy to set up, just a case of plug it in and follow the step by step guide. What I really liked was that it let me choose the region for my channels which is gret becaus we live near in the South West but close to Wales so that the Welsh channels come up which doesn't help us when we want to listen to out local news.

Internet is taking a little longer to learn how to navigate although it was easy to set it up but it's good for browsing.

All in all a good telly.
