This refused to work on my new Panasonic 47 inch smart LED/LCD TV. I tried all-ways, but with no luck. Sound would work on Skype but that is about all.

I recently assisted my mid 90s parents to update their TV with a Panasonic TX-P50UT50B.

Their grand-daughter is about to emigrate to Australia so Skype via the new TV has to be the way to go.

Having now investigated how to achieve this I can't help thinking that Panasonic and Logitech are being somewhat cynical in their marketing strategy:

Firstly - Panasonic do make Skype cameras - but to use one you first need internet connectivity - a £75 extra to enable the SMART TV you just purchased to function as a smart/internet accessing TV. The camera itself is £112.

Of course you could (as I did) purchase one of these "Logitech Skype Camera for Panasonic TVs" - on the basis that they perform the same function but are one third the price of the same camera that Logitech currently sell with internet access built in.

This would be a mistake as the P50OUT50B does not recognise the camera and I suspect neither will most other Panasonic UK 2012/13 models. The only models listed on the Panasonic website as supported are certain 2011 US and Japenese ones.

This returned me to the realisation that to add Skype functionality to my parents TV will cost about £180. The simplest one box solution is the Logitech Skype HD cam - launched in 2012 at £179.99 in the UK ($199 in the USA). I have one of these myself - they are simple to set up, relatively easy to use, provide good sound and picture and are worth nowhere near £179.99. However we live in a cynical world, the oldies are picking up on Skype, they or their kids have the money so let's screw them for what we can. The cheapest Amazon have sold the Logitech Skype HD cam for is £156 - about a month ago but it rapidly climbed back to its £179.99 RRP.
Pay up or go without!

This just works perfectly with Skype on a Panasonic TV. Just plug it into the USB port, power up the TV, go to Skype, sign in a it just works. All my friends/family say the picture and sound are the best they've seen from a TV top camera. Definetly a good choice

I upgraded the firmware on my 2011 Panasonic plasma Tv sometime last year and wanted to try a webcam as one of the Apps available was Skype. Given that Microsoft is doing away with Messenger and switching everyone over to Skype I thought it would be worth the longterm investment to get a webcam for the TV.

The webcam is a well made bit of kit, slightly larger than a traditional webcam you'd used on a laptop. It sits neatly on top of the tv. Just plug it in to a USB connection on the back of the tv ad it was instantly recognised and installed itself. Obviously you will need to connect the tv to your router as well for Skype to work in the first place.
Select the Skype app and sign into your Skype account. It did take a few minutes to the pick up all my existing contacts but everything went smoothly. When using, image and sound quality are good.

Using Skype on a PC is probably quicker and easier in most instances, but If you are a regular Skype user and have a compatible TV, then I can recommend this product.

Top quality product at a bargain price.
Plug and play on my Panasonic LCD flat screen.
Set Skype up real easy and very happy with the picture quality.
As the resolution is high you do need a good Broadband connection to ensure images appear at both ends of the Skype call.

This product was found to be fully compatible with my internet enabled Panasonic TV. I plugged it in and away it went. My Skype recipients told me the picture and sound were perfect.

This product does not work on any blu-ray- hdd recorder made by Panasonic and only on some Panasonic tvs, even though it has the Skype app installed, it will not see this camera, so get Panasonic version, it can be made to work as a web cam by downloading the Skype app on any computer or laptop and is a very good camera
