The main reason for buying this model was its compact size, I didn't want a wide or indeed slim version which would take up valuable space as it was destined to go in the kitchen in a very small space!
I'd like to think when I did the kitchen 10years ago I had the foresight to think ; I'll put a small compact bluray in that space when they make them.....but I must confess I didn't, but I'm very glad its now been filled!!!

The unit itself is only a little bigger in height than a DVD drive in your PC.

There are 3 versions of this compact model: A cheaper black version without 3D BD-ES5000 and the 3D version available in black BD-ES6000 and the white one BD-ES6000e. I went for the white one from Amazon, which i found to be cheaper than the black one elsewhere! Plus being white it blends in with the lightly coloured kitchen and you wouldn't even know it was there! The wife's pleased at least!

I'm not bothered by the 3D side of things, it was the size and colour which were the deciding factors in the end.

How does it perform?
I've read elsewhere a review which says it's noisy, and to be fair I wouldn't have been aware of it had I not read about it. Yes you can hear it when it starts up....if the room is silent!!
Once its playing you can't hear it, and if there's a silent scene and the rooms silent.....you still can't hear it!! Its only when it starts up.
Speaking of start up, its very quick to access the disc! far quicker than my panasonic BD85.

DVD play back is great, pictures crisp and detailed, the upscalling works a treat and as for Bluray; Avatar and Beowulf look fantastic. The detail is superb.

There is no disc drawer like a PC, its a slot, exactly the same as in your car CD drive.
There are no buttons to physically press, they are touch sensitive......like Startrek!
The light on the right side glows when the drive is on standby BUT its off when it plays a disc.

From just inserting the disc to the menu or anything coming up on screen takes:-
DVD
ToyStory2 6 secs.
Independance day 9 secs
Starwars 12 secs.
Bluray:
Beowulf 15 secs.
Apollo13 19 secs
Avatar SE 28 secs.
(The tests above were done with it ON)

Plus if the unit is on standby (light on) just putting the disc in the slot automatically turns it on and draws the disc in.

A bonus feature is the USB port on the back, I connected a Verbatim 2TB external drive to it and wow, I can access all the films and photos on there too! Trouble is there's no place to put the HDD!!!! But it works..........however! I thought i'd share this bit with you, in case anyone's interested.
The access times are bl***dy long! The drive is partitioned into small units 6GB 40GB 500GB etc etc.
The smaller 6GB is accessed within a few seconds but the 500GB takes forever...... like 5 mins.
So if you do make use of this feature keep your partitions small or use a smaller drive.
I did connect an older external HDD which uses my old smaller IDE drives, whilst it did connect everytime the disc is accessed it disconnects, its as if the older technology is too slow, and .....well i tried several and got nowhere!
I also tried one of those USB/IDE connectors and separate PSU to the older IDE drives and it didn't get recognised. Only the external purposebuilt Sata HDD worked.

I've also posted this in the AVForums for those who are owners

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 14 Jun 2012

This product is actually two products in one. There is the blu-ray player and the smart hub thing.
As a blu-ray player this is good. I have no experience with other players but I can see the picture quality is very good.
So why the 2 stars? Well, everything else is very disappointing.
The smart hub turns out to be not a product for the customer who paid samsung for the player but for the big guys in the entertainment industry trying to get in your living through the internet now that they have exausted all TV and discs possibilities. Here is why:

- The unit comes with some pre-installed apps. Some of them you can uninstall, other you just have to stick with them. They can't be uninstalled! Why. Mr Samsung, why? It is MY player why should I not be able to unistall what I don't like/need? What right has a telecom/content company to hog my player with its app?

- I have had it for a couple of weeks and it already asked me to perform 3 or 4 upgrades. They take long but that is not the worst of it. Once it has finished you will find even more apps that you can not unistall and all the other which you were able to remove are back there!!!

- The YouTube app is VERY disappointing. It is very basic. No possibility to set any favourites. It connects to your youtube account though. That is good. In principle you can set that up nicely and use it on your TV through the player. Not so. That would be too nice. That would threaten the big guys offer. Probably the nicest feature of the youtube app would be the possility of watching the channels you have subscribed to. Well, they made sure you can't do that. You can watch just ONE channel. If you want to watch a given channel you have to make sure to be subscribed to it and only to that one. If you have two, it will just pick one at random and stick to it forever.

- The browser: just forget about it. Slow, no plugins for the videos, unusable.

- Finally, there is an issue even with the playing facility. The other nice feature of today's player is the ability to play files from an external hard disk. I connected a 250GB disk and it takes AGES to just show me the files on it. It spend minutes loading the disc and then it just presents the folder structure. No list of avaiable files or anything. You have to browse to the file as in a normal explorer. So, what is all that loading time for?

So, forget about the smart hub. No good. If you want a disc player just buy a good one for half the price.

I agree totally with the review above of this machine. I purchased this as a solution for DVD/Blu-Ray in the bedroom, and the only other thing I definitely wanted was internet TV (my wife and I are big fans of BBC iPlayer). When I initially booted up the machine, I was extremely disappointed to find a machine full of crappy apps I would never ever use, but absolutely no mainstream internet TV (as provided even on a Sony PS3), and I phoned Samsung customer services. They persuaded me that there would be an update within a couple of weeks that would add the iPlayer and similar services, which I bought... and feel like a total mug for doing so. Four weeks later, none of the numerous laborious updates have included what I've been waiting for, so I phoned again a few days ago. Since then I have phoned in an additional two times and have spent over 2 hours with them updating firmware and doing other things that seemed frankly ridiculous (eg: holding down the power switch while the machine is unplugged), and lo and behold.... no iPlayer, whatever they may say. After all that, they then turned round and said it was down to Amazon to refund the machine and nothing to do with them. All I can say is thank God Amazon's customer service is better than any other of these bloody companies I'm continually fighting with, and it's going back in the post tomorrow.
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!
