Product Overview

With Sony's usual Blu-ray excellence and the best web connectivity to date, the Sony BDPS390 goes straight to the top of its class - again!Packing a mighty picture punch for the money, as you'd expect from the inventors of Blu-ray, the BDPS390 has class-leading picture quality. Deep Colour and x.v.Colour provide subtle detail impossible to recreate with DVD. 24p True Cinema ensures the motion stays fluid and judder-free - just as you'd see at the cinema. Furthermore, thanks to the Super Scaler and DVD 24p output, the BDPS390 gets a better performance than ever from your existing DVDs.Having full compatibility with Dolby and DTS HD processors, the BDPS390 has access to the very highest levels of sound quality available from Blu-ray. In comparison to DVD, the sound is more detailed, dynamic and precise - especially in surround sound. To improve the sound of DVDs and CDs still further, there is also a digital output to which you can attach a higher quality DAC.At the heart of the BDPS390's networking ability is the Sony Entertainment Network, giving access to a massive range of apps: YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Lovefilm, Twitter, Facebook and many more. In addition to this application-based browser, the BDPS390 also comes with the Opera web browser for complete Internet access. This time around, the BDPS390 is also DLNA compliant: you can stream data from your laptop, PC or NAS drive device. Even better, streaming from your home hub can be via Ethernet cable or the newly built-in Wi-Fi connection. Thanks to smartphone apps for iPhone or Android, you can take control of the Sony with your phone's touch screen. Use your smart phone to 'push' stored music, photos or video to your TV. Likewise you can 'throw' the webpage you're browsing on your smartphone or tablet to the TV's screen. With its compact dimensions and low height, the BDPS390 fits the tightest of spaces. It also boasts a sleek new look with flush buttons and a seamless top panel.

Arrived on time, easy to set up, easy to use (has a menu system similar to the PS3's XMB), no complaints at all. What you'd expect from a Sony product.

This product performs well - theBlu-Ray is great and the up-scaling produces a very good picture from DVD. However, I was disappointed to find that the 'smart' feature to access catch-up TV only works for BBC iPlayer and not ITV or Channel 4.

What a great multimedia system this player is! Use it mainly for playing movies from USB memory sticks and there are no file types it does not recognize. Also, the built in WiFi is great for catching up on programmes on BBC iPlayer etc without the hassle of phone cables or dongles. All in all an absolute must especially for the price!

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid, if you want a quiet blu ray player., 18 Jan 2013

Cant believe Sony would releaae such a substandard blu ray player. The noise coming from the blu ray drive is shocking, you can hear it 20 feet away, the noise varies from a high pitched whine to a low rumbling sound and totally overshadows quiet scenes when watching blu rays. Unless your going to put this unit in a closed cabinet then I would not recommend it.
Others here have also reported simular things and this is my second unit as amazon replaced the first. The unit is quiet when playing DVD's so its clearly the blu ray mechanism that has a problem. I have stopped the noise somewhat by putting the unit on a bed of foam but should I really be having to do this?. Sony's quality control must be truly shocking to let a poorly designed unit like this hit the consumer line.

On first opening the prduct it was a lot smaller and lighter than I thought it would be. It feels slightly cheap as it's so light. However, the set up was very easy, and the internet connection worked fine with both wired and wireless (I'm on the 10Mb Virgin broadband). Initially I couldn't see how to add Lovefilm or BBC iPlayer, but a software update seemed to fix that, and now I'm all set up. The Lovefilm set up was a bit annoying (you have to go online via your laptop, enable it, and then enter a code on the player), but it works brilliantly even on this relatively slow connection.

My main uses for this machine are to watch DVD's (we don't actually own any blu-rays at the moment but may do in the future), and watch BBC iPlayer and Lovefilm. All of these work pretty well, though BBC iPlayer is a little bit clunky. Therefore I can't really comment on the blu-ray performance at the moment.

The only infuriating thing about the iPlayer app is the fast forward/rewind bit. I press the fast forward button once and it skips like 5 minutes of the program. I try to go back and it skips back past where I was in the programme, with no way of getting back to where I was before. Absolutely maddening. Assume it's a problem with the app not the player. I would still have given this four stars anyway but it is really annoying.

We bought this product without really understanding what it did. However, we followed the easy-to-understand instructions and have had a whole new world opened up "before our very eyes!" Strongly recommend this device.

Reviewed and read about all makes and models of blu-ray players and I specifically wanted one below the £100 mark and did not required 3D but had to have WiFi Internet connection. This one came out on top with many reviewers and magazines. Put simply it is brilliant, the WiFi was easy to set up and is now mostly used for watching Lovefilm, You can easily connect this unit to your PC/Laptop and stream videos and music. The up scaling of DVD's is excellent and of course blu-rays are awesome. This must be as stated one of the best players around for under the £100.
