1.0 out of 5 stars Excessive Fan noise + Ultimate failure of device after 30 days, 2 Feb 2013

Excessive Fan noise + Ultimate failure of device after 30 days. I bought this to replace my 3yr HD Panasonic home cinema system. I noticed other reviews stating excessive fan noise but as Sony is such a good brand I gave it a whirl. Out of the box it looked fabulous. It was easy to hook up too. Sounded fantastic, but during silent periods of the film all you can hear is the dreadful hum of the fan? Note I've never pushed the amp and the fan engages from the off. The sound quality from the three speakers is first-rate but I'd need to hide the player in an integrated housing to cancel out the fan noise which defeats the purpose of investing in such a stylish system? All this being said I decided I'd live with it. But the system broke down yesterday stalling consistently when `reading' a selection of brand new DVDs? Amazon have been excellent with their returns policy and have agreed to pick it up in 24hrs for a replacement or refund. Safe to say I'm going for a full refund and will search for something of equal quality but quieter!

I did not want to give it very bad marks because it looked solid and was good to look at. However the one i got did not work. it would not start up properly and had to go back.

I gave it 3 points for this but from the little i did manage to see and hear I, I intend to buy a working one.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Just to get this review into context - we are of an age where we could be rather overwhelmed by technical stuff, having witnessed the coming of BBC2 (making three channels to choose from) and colour television.

We have noticed that products of this type are often marketed towards young people, so it was with intense interest that we tried out this Home Theatre System, having eyed them since they appeared in the shops. Our main concern was - would we actually use it, being fairly light television watchers. We have a fairly standard 34" flat screen tv with a Freeview box.

The good points:

The whole outfit looks very stylish, think Bang and Olufsen.

It's very easy to set up. It comes with the usual black and white booklet in a variety of languages and also a really useful little colour pamphlet called 'Start here' which is a series of clear photographs, so something of an idiots-guide to setting up,
making the whole set-up quick and stress free.

The only extra we had to purchase a 'HDMI' cable (bought from Curry's for about £30.00) so we could link in the internet.

The quality of sound produced is astounding! TV programmes, especially those with a high music content, DVD's and music CD's are like never before. We listen to the radio via it and it is fantastic to have BBC iPlayer, Youtube, Lovefilm streaming etc on the tv rather than the laptop. Indeed you do not need a computer at all to see BBC iPlayer etc as this is all built in - you just need an internet connection (we have BT Broadband and live in a rural area so the signal is not 'strong', but we have no problem receiving services). Once you know which buttons to press it is all so very easy - and this comes from someone who is not techinally-minded at all.

So, do we actually use it? You bet! Over the weeks we have been using this our viewing has been enhanced beyond our expectations. Very highly recommended.

Having invested in a Sony Smart TV and been unimpressed by the standard sound from Sony TV's in the past I decided to couple my purchase with this home cinema system with the hope that it would both deliver improved sound quality and a blu-ray player to allow me access to additional 3D content. I hooked it up easily and efficiently, positioned the large speaker units around that room and wow - I was drawn in immediately by both the quality and the depth of sound, but the real test would be in playing a 3D film.

As expected the 3D blu-ray player delivered a quality picture to the TV means that you can enjoy a similar level of 3D that you will find in the cinema. Unsurprisingly the sound coming from the 3 speakers isn't quite the same experience as going to the cinema but would undoubtedly get top marks for coming close. The units size meant that the filled the room with sound and when well placed appear to emulate the experience you get from a larger number of smaller devices that is common in the realms of home cinema. If you've got the space - it definitely adds to the experience in a positive way.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
It was very hard not to get over excited when setting up this Blu-ray Home Cinema System as it is a beautiful looking piece of equipment. The actual Blu-ray player has a lovely smooth and shiny looking silver and black finish that lights up in a way of which looks like it comes alive, almost breathing when it's switched on. Although it comes with a remote control the buttons on the player are too nice not to use! But did it live up to my expectations?

First I rigged up the player to the TV via a HDMI cable - an extra purchase, which is a little frustrating, but not unusual these days. Then I added a link (via another HDMI cable - Yes I needed two) from the box to my trusty Playstation 3. And boy, did it improve gameplay. Initially, none of my family were as excited as me when I said what was coming our way, but when they saw the improved picture quality whilst gaming they couldn't hide their pleasure. They were, like me, very impressed. The picture quality is so much more detailed than any of us are used to, and the sound is impressive. Especially with the huge (and it is rather big) subwoofer attached. Subwoofers are used for easier reproduction and clarity of lower (bass) frequencies, like thunder and other deep bangs and rumbles. By the way, this can really improve the ambiance of many films, especially spooky ones with sudden, startling bangs.

My next test was playing normal DVD's on the Blu-ray player, and I must say it was impressive too. I wouldn't have believed the improved viewing experience without seeing it with my own eyes. Then I rushed out and bought a Blu-ray film to try out, and the sound and picture quality and clear detail was even more amazing. So much so, I could never go back to using just a DVD player now.

I did buy a film that also had a 3D version, not knowing if it would work on my older Sony Bravia TV which is not 3D ready. Sad but not surprisingly to say the 3D film didn't work, but now I am itching to find someone who has a more modern telly to experiment with.

It's true, the clarity and realism this full high definition system creates is spectacular. And because of the built in wifi (which I found easy to initiate with a set up `wizard') it makes it fun and easy to upload photos and find films and songs through the Sony Entertainment Network, which looks very much like the network available on Sony's Playstation PS3. The slim speakers are easy to wire up and connect; looking very sleek and producing a pleasing, clear, surround sound effect. They are front surround speakers, so it's not pure surround sound, as such, but it was much clearer and supplied a more realistic "actually there" feeling to my film-watching experience. And I love watching films!

It also has two USB ports, so an external drive/stick can be added at the same time as surfing the net, although, surfing is a bit annoying via the remote control as it is much slower than when using a keyboard, as you can well imagine. I also found it doesn't like Flashplayer, so some applications wouldn't work if Flashplayer was required. Not sure if this is something that has a workaround or not since I am still playing with a lot of the new (to me) features. The system comes with built in FM radio, but no DAB, and an iPod dock, which makes charging and playing music through these smart looking speakers extremely easy. And loud! Streaming content from your computer is also possible. Even YouTube and iPlayer have so much more detail than I am used to.

I would definitely recommend this Blu-ray Home Cinema System as I have already received immense enjoyment out of it, even without a telly with 3D capabilities. And if you own a Sony Playstation you'll love it just for the improved picture and sound quality during your gaming. That alone makes it worth the money in my book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home cinema system that changes the way you view TV and film, 19 July 2012

This home system brings TV and films into your home in a whole new way. It's quite simply amazing. The sound is tremendous and the 3D picture is astounding ... you literally feel like you're in the middle of the picture.

The system gives you access to a range of services via a wi-fi connection - you can access on demand TV such as BBC iPlayer, 4 on demand etc as well as a range of internet movies and Netflix or LoveFilm if you have an account with one of those providers.

For me, one of the best things about this system is how easy it is to install. Instructions are clear, but the installation isn't complicated anyway. It comes in 4 sleek, stylish pieces - a black subwoofer which looks like a computer tower, 2 slim speakers and the main unit which is compact, with a modern, state of the art look and feel. Blu ray disks are inserted to the side of the unit and the digital display adds to the high-tech spec of this system.

The speakers can be wall mounted or can simply sit to the side of your TV and there's an iPod dock which charges your device as well as plays your audio through the amazing speakers.

Navigation through the menu options is very straight forward once you get the hang of it - which takes a matter of minutes. The only slight trouble I had was accessing Netflix through it - it took me a while to realise I had to link my Netflix account with the unit using a PC rather than doing it through the wifi on the box itself.

That's really a small complaint ... now that it's all linked up, it's really easy to use and I absolutely could never again be without it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Neat and impressive, 24 Jun 2012

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Firstly, just what is the Sony BDVNF720 (don't Sony love these catchy titles)?

It's a Blu-ray player with 3D capability.
It has built-in Wi-Fi to enable internet services on your TV like YouTube, Lovefilm, Netflix, iPlayer and many others. Basically it makes your TV a `Smart TV'.
- It is a '3D' sound system - not strictly surround sound as there are just two front speakers and a sub-woofer.
- It also has FM radio (no DAB), a USB input to play a wide range of video and audio formats and separate dock for an iPod or iPhone.

It's a neat system, consisting of just four items. The main unit (player and amp) is curvy and low-profile; discs slot load at the side, you need access to the top so you can't stack anything above it. It's a slightly unusual design but the mix of brushed chrome and piano black looks quite classy. The two front speakers are smaller than you might guess from the picture - 15" high and about an 1" deep but they feel quite substantial. Sony declare proudly they are 'Magnetic Fluid' speakers - whatever that means. The heavy sub-woofer is just over a foot high and 15" deep.

Set-up is fairly straightforward despite minimal printed documentation but it took a couple of attempts to connect to my home Wi-Fi. Connecting to Lovefilm was slightly irritating as the Lovefilm/Sony connection code displayed on the TV (and entered via Sony's website) was half hidden behind text, meaning I had to guess half the letters, but eventually connection was made and Lovefilm 'instant' movies easily accessible. You can also stream content from your computer (not so easy for Mac users, but possible).

So, what does is sound like? Given the small size of the front speakers, remarkably good. Movies sound big and loud with great dynamics and the system really does give a very good sense of space. No, you can't really call it surround sound (Sony call it `S-Force PRO Front Surround' - `front surround'?) but it's as close as you can get with just two speakers and a sub-bass. There's little wrong with it as a reasonably priced home cinema audio system but hi-fi buffs will find it a little too hard and digital for music - it lacks warmth and the top end has what I can only describe as a metallic feel to it. But for movies, which is what it's made for, it's impressive.

Blu-ray picture quality is, as you would expect, great - I don't have a 3D TV so I can't comment on 3D capability. DVDs, upscaled to HD, look good too. YouTube and iPlayer are also surprisingly good on an HD TV.

Would I recommend it? It's great if you need a good Blu-ray player, don't have a Smart TV with internet capability nor a surround sound system - if you have one of those items already, this may not be the best deal.. The speakers are very neat and the simulated surround sound surprisingly impressive but, personally, I prefer the more natural (if less spacey) sound of a conventional hi-fi system. All-in-all it feels like a quality package and if it fits your requirements, I would highly recommend it.
