Product Overview

Thanks to a number of high-end technologies, the Sony BDPS790 really does take Blu-ray to the next level. Perhaps the most impressive of these technologies is Digital Cinema 4K. This upscales conventional Blu-ray to the new 4K standard. When matched to a suitable 4K display, this gives an incredible 4 x the detail of the already impressive 1080p of Blu-ray. Simply put, detail and realism are unmatched. Even if you don't have a 4K screen just yet, though, you can take advantage of other Sony tech. Super Bit Mapping means the standard picture is smoother, more realistic and with more natural colour than before. Super Scaler (Precision CinemaHD upscale) and DVD 24p output, ensure the BDPS790 gets a better performance than ever from your existing DVDs, too.The Sony BDPS790 also features 3D playback. With more and more films now available in 3D plus the swelling numbers of 3D compatible 3D TVs, now is a great time to adopt the format. The BDP-S790 also comes with a 2D - 3D convertor. This means that you can watch any disc, converted into 3D!At the heart of the Sony BDPS790's networking ability is the Sony Entertainment Network. This gives access to a massive range of apps, including the highly popular YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Lovefilm, Twitter, Facebook and many more. In addition to an application based browser for the most well known sites, the BDPS790 also comes with the Opera web browser for full Internet access (display of embedded video restricted). The BDPS790 is also DLNA compliant meaning that you can stream data from your laptop, PC or NAS drive device. With built-in Skype you simply need to add a communication camera to enable this Blu-ray player to be at the heart of your communications. Now you can see who you're talking to on the big screen and from the comfort of your sofa. With its compact dimensions and low height, the BDPS790 fits the tightest of spaces. It also boasts a sleek new look with flush buttons and a seamless top panel.

First of all player has nothin good about it, that's worth spending the extra money on compared to the bdp590. Player is slim and small. But runs like its on steam and cog wheels. That's how loud it is. Even the disk door opens and closes like its gaggin for a bit of wd40! Wouldn't be surprised if the player stops workin in a few months. Player is lightweight and defo understand what other reviewers have stated about player feelin cheap. Also the nasty playstation menu system just adds to the cheap and nastiness.

Two stars possibly a bit mean but as a person living in Greece I bought the player thinking the smart facilities would allow me to watch uk tv but the utility i wished to use required adobe flash player So as i already have a dvd player it was a complete waste of £200 I realise now that few if any smart players or tv's have this facility. Should i have found out first? Well maybe but a product that makes a big splash about online facilities should perhaps state that it can't do what a computer does

Fast start up and very good quality picture, didn't need all the Internet stuff though as the TV takes care of all that.
Got this one for the 3D and have not been disappointed at all, would recommend this player to anyone

Like one of the reviewers I too have an Oppo BDP95 a player, I regard as the Reference standard in any comparison of performance of Blu Ray players not the least because of the inclusion in that player of the latest processors together with its ridiculously good for the price Audio ,both digital and analog , DSD play back of SACDs in both with the inclusion of the Sabre 32 DAC usually before only fitted to players in so called hi end players such as DCS .

However in purchasing this Sony I did not have my audiophile hat on ,rather just needed a player that could run 3D ( for what its worth) to take advantage of a new Passive smart 3D TV and integrate with an existing KEF Home cinema 7.1 outfit .

In that respect( Video and bit-steam HDMI Audio) I can report it does indeed do the job as well as the Oppo the picture is excellent and well defined in both 2 and 3D with the added benefit for those who need it of having the built in wireless and net facilities such as netflix and i player and quite a few more, set up is a breeze and simple and the unit updated its firmware automatically.

The player even has the ability to send DSD over HDMI but unlike the oppo has no analog outputs.

So if like me you only looking for a player that can do your 2nd movie system justice as well as a more upmarket hi end player ,then this player is like having the OPPO video section without the Hi Fi Audio bits and I can highly recommend it

And its cheap too.

So far it has done all that I have expected. It set itself up well making connection to the TV and Wifi. Every DVD I have tried worked well but as yet I have not got any blueray disks to try. I am looking forward to seeing my first 3D film.

only had my 790 for one week and i'm very impressed with its performance. Setup was a breeze apart from having to play around with the audio settings. The players wifi picked up my network with no problems and have only tried the sky news app which worked very well. When it comes to picture and sound quality it is simply stunning, watching titanic 3D had great depth with sharp vibrant detail. Have not had chance to see the upscalling capabilities but if its anything like my previous sony players this will not be an issue. I tend to agree with some reviews which have touched on its build quality and its price tag, but then you have to take into account the technology under its hood. Im pretty sure there will be some players on the market which cost twice three times more and are built like flight recorder boxes but perform on a par or even fall short of this sony bdp-s790. I would have no problem recommending this latest offering from sony as it performs at a high level and its array of features are pretty well futureproof.

bought this as it was on offer with a tv i got.what a good buy, when you get it out of the box you may think its a bit on the cheap side but once its up and running wow picture is stunning and the sound when played through an amp is outstanding.i particularly like the twin hdmi outputs,a great idea when you don't want to upgrade your amp but still want to watch 3D films.well done Sony,a manufacturer that thinks of the customer for once, cant recommend this player enough it blows away my old Panasonic.

4.0 out of 5 stars An evolution of player not a revolution, 7 Nov 2012

I've bought a few disc players in my time, both personally and professionally, gone are the days when most of them cost about £250 and were built to last.

Times change and now most players below £500 are lightweight devices and differ only in features not in heft. This is my 4th Blu-ray player and I'm happy to say that all the other 3 are still working. This player does offer a lot of features, certainly some that the sub £100 players do not.

You get the following features

1) Integrated Wi-Fi. No worrying about a separate expensive dongle
2) 3D Blu-ray Playback
3) SACD Playback, an underrated format
4) Dual HMDI sockets (handy for Amps that don't support 3D)
5) 4K upscaling (well actually UHD)

What you don't get any longer... component output, if that's important, this is disappearing from players now.

I'm happy to say this machine plays all discs, DVDs and Blu-rays back very well, it's a very responsive player. It has a number of picture tweaks, found in the options menu, that other cheaper (and older) players do not have, noise reduction, sharpness etc controls. Also this machine can play back 3D Blu-rays and gives you easy access to online content, BBC iPlayer, Lovefilm etc. Although I have to say those are the only 2 providers I regularly use, there are a lot more listed most quite niche in their appeal.

Something else this machine has that I've not had before on a Blu-ray player, touch sensitive buttons that are lit when the machine powers on and these flash as the machine powers on and shuts down.

Video quality is very good from Blu-rays although I haven't tried DVDs yet, SACDs particularly multi-channel releases sound amazing, although that's not down to this machine really as the decoding is done my my amp.

Load times for Blu-rays are not as speedy as the PS3 but certainly much quicker than 1st Generation players. It takes about 40 seconds from disc loading to actually get to the main menu, this is with the quick start function turned off.

There are a lot of settings in the menu and if this is your first player you might find it a bit intimidating, although setting the machine up on 1st power on is easy as you have to navigate your way through a setup wizard which only takes a couple of minutes max. Wi-Fi range and speed seems pretty good, my machine is 3 rooms away from my router, helped by the fact that this machine has a plastic semi glossy top, yes another fingerprint magnet.

There is also the ability to playback other formats through USB, Wi-fi or ethernet, I haven't tried this yet but I'm not holding out much hope as Sony have traditionally been weak in the formats they support for this function. LG and Samsung are better bets if this is important to you.

So overall this is a pretty good machine, although one thing I have noticed is that the drive mechanism does seem to be slightly more noisy than older models, although the fan noise is hardly noticeable. Although once it's burried in my rack I hope the noise is not as noticable.

So to sum up, yes you are paying more money for more features, if these are important to you then this player should be on your short list, if not then the entry level Sony player, the BDP-S390 should serve you well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good for the connected home, but lipsync issues!?, 5 Nov 2012

My previous BD player (Sony BDP-S760) seems to have more options to tweak than this current offering, but in terms of what you can do with this newer model (3D playback, web viewing, widgets etc.) this far outclasses the old player...

Picture quality is - as you would expect for a top of the line Sony, very good (especially after playing around with the tweaks) - however, one thing that is a little frustrating is that I have lipsync issues (corrected by adding 50ms of delay) - technically anything that has HDMI v1.3 or better shouldn't suffer from lipsync problems, and my old player proves that, also - the audio seems a little disjointed (lack of atmosphere, sounding somewhat sterile to my ears)...

If it wasn't for getting a 3D TV (the very good Sony KDL-46HX853) I would - in hindsight probably stayed with the S760...

Anyway, I have dropped the final star just purely for the audio issues I'm having - but, don't let that stop you - if you haven't previously had a top of the line player, from picking this up :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect choice, 2 Nov 2012

I bought this player two weeks ago, just to play discs for my new 3D Tv set.
In this range of price, there is no other BD player to compete with SONY BDP 790.
Having a Denon 1910 receiver, that cannot handle 3D signal, this player was the most natural choice. It offers the possibility to split audio from video signal using two HDMI exits. Great job done and a lot of money saved.
I cannot say something about its smart features, because I never connected it to the Internet.
Regarding the image and sound quality, I cannot find the right words to describe how good is this little one.
It is true, I made the switch between my old gears and this pair of LG 42LM760S and Sony BDP790.
Bought together, after pairing and some fine tunnings, the image is great, the sound is impressive.
3D decoding is perfect, the colors gradation is amazing, very deep level of black, extremely smooth image in panning.
You can't whish more.
One minor minus of this player: in my opinion, is a little bit noisy when loading. Could be the price paid for a shorter loading time.
Fully recommended.
