Before purchasing I spent a lot of time weighing up the pros and cons. All of my home theatre equipment are pre smart TV days! I have recently set up a Synology NAS that I got a deal on from a friend on. As my TV is not a smart one I needed something in the middle to allow me to stream from the network (HDMI Passthrough audio was a must here). First problem I knew I bumped into through the reviews was the lack of DLNA for audio. Problem then was that the NAS isn't fast enough to run plex and I knew Synology hadn't developed their sweet of DS apps for the Google TV platform. So after reading mixed reviews I decided to take the plunge anyway. So I installed BubbleUPnP onto it and using the swanky remote I found that this was my solution! This worked but it still required me to have my TV on in order to navigate my music library. It was only a few days later that I turned on DS Audio on my Ipad and low and behold it asks me would I like to play through the "Ipad" of "BubbleUPnP (NSZ-GS7)" bearing in mind the GS7 box was off. Since then I have been happily playing my library from the DS Audio app on the pad to the Sony box all whilst keeping the TV switched off. Yes granted when you tap play on a song it takes maybe 3/5 seconds to start. So here 5/5 stars for fulfilling my requirements.
As for the remote, I was able to configure it to control my TV (Samsung) and home cinema (Pioneer). The database for compatible devices here seems to be endless. As the remote is bluetooth (the IR blaster turns it into a standard remote) there can be a 2/3 second delay in the tv receiving commands (I presume due to the remote hibernating from not been used for a few minutes or more)but that is only on the first command. I do not currently have a digital tv box with HDMI out so I am not able to test the HDMI input on the GS7 as a result I can't comment there but 5/5 stars again.
The reason for the 4/5 stars overall is that Sony have all the hardware sitting there in a neat box, which for myself does the job, but due to the Google platform it's full potential is not been utilized. Developers of android apps need to be encouraged/pushed to develop for the TV platform as well as the mobile (Just like the iphone/ipad app store which are fairly the same now). Yes the lack of direct DLNA functionality is pretty poor (I did read the first generation with Blu-Ray had this function) but a free app to an app that costs under £3 can solve it.
I guess overall decide what you want/expect your box to do and figure out if it is right for you. Personally for me it does the job!

This is a great product, quick and easy to set up, it controls both my TV and my Virgin media box... It has access to the play store but app support is lacking a little but with apps like Plex, crunchyroll and Netflix you should get all the media you need... 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful

This is my first Amazon review which I was moved to write by some of my experiences as described below.I had great hopes for this item and it did many things quite well. As others have said it is a great idea, just not particularly well executed....and then there is the uncertainty over the general future of GoogleTV as well. My specific reasons for giving a 1-star rating, in spite of Amazon generally doing its usual good job of serving the customer, are two-fold:
1. This item did not, at least for me, work as advertised. Most specifically I could not get it to display widescreen 16:9 anamorphic video streams properly....instead it kept wanting to 'squash' them into something resembling a 4:3 ratio and the result was not pleasant to watch. Despite trying many combinations of settings I could not get that video format, which represents a majority of recent DVD encodings (older 4:3 formats displayed perfectly), to display correctly. And on investigating some relevant forums I learned I was not the only person having this issue.....so the device had to go back; and
2. Had that been the only issue I would have rated this transaction in the 2to3-star range. However, the worst part was when I tried to return the item. Amazon itself made the process easy, but I made the mistake of choosing (this was my first Amazon return) the Yodel courier pickup option. It seemed the best option, but of course that is only true if the courier can be bothered to turn up on the scheduled day!
I arranged one day and waited in....nothing. I contacted Yodel who then made a second booking, and for my part I had to arrange for someone else to wait in....again nothing. During this, apart from accepting the bookings, and one short emailed 'sorry' in response to my own email query about the first pickup being missed (they have not as yet come back with anything as regards my email regarding the second missed pickup) they have done nothing. No contact to say they couldn't make it and would I like to book another time, no explanation or apology for the inconvenience it may have caused....NOTHING! They have effectively wasted two man-days of customer time and don't seem to even know or care about it. I ended up resorting to the Royal Mail for my item return!
Yodel, IMHO you are incompetent and rude amateurs and reflect poorly on Amazon's otherwise generally good customer service. Amazon, if I were you I'd think hard about dumping these cowboys before they do your reputation any further damage....I doubt I'm the only one who has had a poor experience with them. And it has actually managed to moved me to write this, my first ever Amazon review, that many others might read; as well as incenting me to make a written complaint. Think about the ramifications of these actions in terms of how annoyed it can make a customer and what it can inspire them to do! Other Amazon customers.....you have been warned......in my view and experience Yodel sucks and doesn't care about customer service!

Oh dear. I'm really struggling to think of anything positive about this product. I bought it hoping for a media player on which I could watch BBC Iplayer, 4od, sky go etc. How disappointed I was! Upon opening the product and setting up, it took over an hour to set it up to my wifi. The user interface is so cumbersome and fiddly that it was difficult to browse with much ease. Then, to my huge disappointment, I found out that there are only a handful of APPS on the Google Play store that work on it -NOT including Iplayer, 4OD or any useful media-playing apps, expect a handful of American ones. Needless to say, I sent it back the next day. I strongly warn you not to waste your time - at least until some more Apps become available and they develop this product to make it more user friendly.

After ordering the SONY box i read a few more reviews on the web and became a little reticent. Were these reviews objective or were they just none tech people who didn't know one end of an Android platform from the other. As it turned out i need not have worried they were right and the box is CRAP.In comparison to other Android boxes its very expensive for what it does or more correctly fails to achieve.
Sony in their wisdom have "failed to allow" the installation a lot of great Apps that could breath life into this box. XBMC among other favorites fails to show in Google's Play Store. No problem SIDE LOAD it !!! that fails too. Its almost as though SONY HAVE INTENTIONALLY LOCKED THE SYSTEM so your forced to pay for a pick of their meager offerings.
My best advice for software is use Avia Media Player to play most video files,
Blackmoon File Manager speaks for itself
Media House for streaming from a home network or PLEX if your "Tech Savvy"
The SONY box doesn't come with on ON/OFF switch but not to worry as somehow the Android system and the box don't get on and from time to time the box just crashes and resets its self anyway. With the built in TV Pass through this is guaranteed to cause your TV to stop working just as some hopeful on "Britain's Got X Factor" is revving up to kill another song only your mum could love.
The remote on the other had is a fabulous piece of kit and goes some way to redeem the boxes failings. Navigation, entering text & even controlling you own TV DVD etc becomes possible with one fantastic piece of kit.
Im guessing that Two teams were responsible for the Sony NSZ-GS7 Internet Player design. One team with intelligence common sense and a practical approach to design the other with and endless supply of beer.
Will i bin this box? With its almost perfect dimensions and robust case design its a keeper. I intend to push it next to the toilet so my 3yr old boy can "hit the target" better
All i can say is if you haven't yet DONT buy this
Ive just ordered a UG007 Android 4.1 stick.

Well where to start when one is so disappointed. I have had a forerunner to this model for years so I was really looking forward to using this model and that's where all goes down hill, I set the unit up, download BBC iplayer app promptly gets message this app not compatible with this unit all right I thought I will run it through the chrome internet explorer BBC I player will not run on this unit, as was the reply for ITV player, 5 on demand and any other player you choose to mention. So email Sony in case I was missing something in the set they did not even grace me with a reply. So Sony your customer service is trash along with your unit. I really hope this bites somewhere where it hurts ! 5.0 out of 5 stars Great product - particularly for multi-room style setup, 16 Jan 2013

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
I ordered this Internet player to get more use out of a TV I have up in our attic which at present has an old console plugged into it and not much else. The first thing I was struck with was what a neat little box it was - tucks away nicely without taking up too much space.
It was really easy to set up - a few updates required to get up and running but once it was done it's simple to navigate and the remote control with the keyboard on one side is a really nice touch. One issue I've had trying to use similar content on games consoles is having to fiddle around with a games controller to type stuff in. The remote is just handy enough to type in a URL or a brief bit of text on a website with no hassle at all.
I don't use it for many of the apps etc. so I can't tell you much about those but it has allowed us to use an old LCD TV that was sitting in the corner without any Sky or Freesat connection for watching films and TV content, surfing the web etc. all on a big screen rather than sitting around with a laptop and has created an additional sitting room in our house - great for when I want to take residence in the front room to watch endless sport! My wife can catch up on things on the "other telly"!!
If you have a tablet and like to watch things on the move or around the house then this is perhaps not very useful but if you want to create another sitting room in your house with very little hassle then this is one solution to that problem!
