3.0 out of 5 stars Good screen size let down by touch-sensitive buttons & too short mains lead, 13 Jan 2013

We bought this to upgrade our existing 7" screened Sony DVPFX770W. It is used almost exclusively by our two children, 5 & 6 yrs old. While the 9" screen size is great and picture clarity good, it is severely let down by the mains cable which is far too short to be used without an extension cable. This is both annoying and inconvenient. The old model's cable is over 180cm long, while this model's is c. 90cm, half the length. And having contacted Sony & their spare parts supplier, a longer version does not exist. The other problem we have encountered is with the touch-sensitive buttons. These need such a light touch that it is easy to mis-direct your action or get no response at all. The children, particularly, find this frustrating as the lack of response The lid of the machine is no longer opened via a button, rather by pushing on the lid. This is not a good design as it is easy to inadvertently push open the lid while playing a DVD. The battery life is not as long as the old model, but this is, I believe due to the 9" screen size. All in all I wish I hadn't bought this model as the increased screen size does not out-weight the other frustrations. 5.0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied. Just what I wanted, and more., 26 Dec 2012

superb vision and sound. i like the four sound options, that you don't find on other players. i use the dynamic sound with headphones and love it. i look forward to using it on long train journeys! It's a shame that there so few outlets where you can buy this unit. At about £98 with p&p, this is good value.

This is a great little DVD player but I have one small gripe. And that is it doesn't appear to be compatible with headphones that have an iPhone inline remote. I tried two pairs with remotes and the sound was poor and erratic but I then tried a couple of pairs without the remote and voila! No more sound issues.Overall the device is very good, it has some nice features and decent battery but be prepared to buy some new headphones if yours only have an inline remote.

Unlike the nine inch screen version, our Sony seven inch screen DVD player doesn't come with a remote control, so every control required is a button on the player. My kids have no problems using the 'click' buttons to operate the player. My teenage daughter prefers this method of operation as our old portable player couldn't operate when the remote battery failed, and they were short lived expensive coin batteries. The chunky bottomed Sony has a inbuilt battery capable of 'up to 4 hours' replay and the DVD player also works running off the mains or 12v car supply when the battery is recharging. Despite the quoted 7" LCD screen resolution of only 480×234 the picture quality is pretty good at standard viewing distances, and the twin speaker sound is impressive (with Standard/Dynamic/Vocals/Off options), although there is the odd speaker rattle when played very loud. There's also a USB socket for a USB2 flash drive to replay PC MP3, jPeg and video MPeg-4 or xvid AVI files. The player can handle commercial DVDs, DVD-/+R, CDs and VCD disks. The disc spinning mechanics are fairly quiet in operation, and the DVD player is region 2 locked (and with no remote option it's probably impossible to convert it to region free). There's only one headphone out so a headphone splitter adaptor is required for dual viewing, which does drop the volume a bit. There's a slide-on power switch, and standard buttons for DVD control, Eject and setup options (LCD/Disc/USB/Setup). The unit has two LEDs for charging and power in, and there's a jack socket for the AV out to a TV. As well as displaying the menu/video, the LCD screen can also show the battery charge left and display on-screen information like 'paused'. Playback position on the DVD is lost when the player is switched off. The 7" screen is quite small at 15.5 x 8.7 cm as it's very 16:9 widescreen. Sony also make a similar 9" screen version of this DVD player, the DVP-FX980, that includes a decent 2xAA battery RMT-D195 remote as well as the higher resolution 800×480 9" screen, but it is 3.6 x 1.5 cm bigger and costs almost twice as much as this 7" model.
Overall our Sony 7" player works perfectly well via the click buttons on the top, and the TV out is very useful on hols when there's a TV in the caravan/cottage. When connected to a TV you do miss the lack of a remote though. Mostly our DVD player is used by our kids in the car or in bed, and it's a hit with them - so 5* at the typical street price of £85. The Sony is 200 x 42.5 x 155 mm, weighs 1.4kg, seems well made (including the charger/12v lead) and looks very classy in black, particularly with the patterned Sony lid folded down (bit like a netbook). The Sony 7" DVD player comes with a 13A plug mains charger (90 cm lead), a 12v car cable (180cm lead), the instruction booklet, and an AV out adaptor cable. This three phono (red/white audio + yellow video) composite adaptor cable is a bit of a pain as it is only 17cm long and terminates in phono sockets, so another cable is required to pass on the signal to the TV (typically a three phono plug to SCART lead).
